Traditional Japanese wood processing YAKISUGI dates back as long as 1,700 years, although earlier records that refer to it also exist. The process includes the burning of wood to ensure the beauty and durability of the material. The technique was invented with the purpose of extending the life of the wood, by making it resistant to fire, pests and decay. Architects and designers throughout Europe, North America and Japan revitalised this method in early 2000 and the unique properties created by YAKISUGI are again used for interior and exterior finishing in architectural solutions worldwide.
In comparison with other facade finishing boards, the products of KOTUMAKI possess significant advantages. This ecological material is durable and long lasting – resistant to various types of fungi and bacteria, it does not turn blue, does not get covered with mould and pests do not live in it. After production and installation, the material does not require any care or servicing
The material used for the production of KOTUMAKI products are: spruce, larch, pine & oak. The finishing boards offered by us are made from specially selected spruce and larch sawn wood. Only class A level boards are used, which are additionally sorted after processing to ensure a result that conforms to the quality criteria set by KOTUMAKI. To prevent deformation during processing, the finishing boards are industrially dried to the moisture of KD 14% (±2%). The “displacement” capacity of the material after processing is reduced by approximately 40%, thus ensuring maximum efficiency in preserving the shape and adaptability of the element.
The wood is characterised by higher fire resistance than wood processed using other methods. Fire resistance in accordance with (B2)* class
*B – the building product does not create general flammable situations, but it can burn in the case if a fire has developed.
